Thursday, 03 September 2009
First off, knowing and understanding the rules of the game is a must. While there are a few ‘rules-of-play’ that are specific to Texas Hold’em, the basic rules and regulations of poker remain the same. So the rules for betting in the game may be different but the manner in which the winning hands are decided or the game is played do not change.

It’s one of the most-played games across the globe today. While inherently simple, the key to playing Texas Hold’em is understanding a few twists and turns that form the fabric of the game. That’s why I have here a few simple guidelines that every player can keep in mind before he plays this variation of poker.

Recognize a good hand…
In order to ensure that your knowledge of the rules and regulations is converted to winning beats, let’s first understand what defines a good hand. We know that the game involves two cards or hole given to the player and five community cards or flop set out on the table. It is up to the player to make a quick but sound decision on which of the cards in the flop can combine with the hole to make a winning hand. Certain games might allow variations but royal flushes, straights etc constitute winning hands.

Different rules for different versions…
Intricacies of the rule manual can change if one is playing variations of Texas Hold’em. For instance, it is up to the players to decide whether they want to allow unlimited raising in a no limit game. However, the bets made in this type of game could go up to any amount. On the other hand, players could fix a number to the amount of money played in bets. Always keep in mind that any rule can be tweaked or formed only at the start of the game.

Practice your game…
Whatever the game variation you play, basic poker rules remain unchanged. It is also up to the player to translate his/her know-how of the game into practical wins. Therefore, practice the way you bluff, what you should bet in different game scenarios, and most importantly, when it’s the right time to fold. If you think your cards are just not up to the mark, nothing should stop you from throwing in your cards. That’s also an intelligent choice that protects your stack from depleting.

The first rule of Texas Hold’em is that every player should have fun. SO learn and understand the rules but use them according to your needs and style of play, ensuring that you enjoy playing the game more than anything else.
